We are back once more at uni and I can say exciting times & ready to give it a go. The trimester does look quite intense as we the subject of post production was introduced. One may want to know the meaning of post production. It may be defined as work done on a film or recording after filming or recording has taken place. It is not limited to music only rather deals with voiceovers, foley & sound effects applying or using them on films, advertisements, trailers etc.

The first project will be a short film we chose as a team. We three group members & looking forward to working as a team to bring the best outcome. The task is to recreate audio for the original film and I believe that it requires a proper project plan that we are in the process of creating together with our project pitch.

There was also a time in class we discussed about different genres in music after each person was asked to highlight their favorite music genre. The word Aesthetics became an interesting word for me. How we feel and how we see life music plays an important role one can breakdown some characteristics that give value our musical senses and that artistic value is aesthetics.

A piece of music can be perceived to be an artistic beauty characterised by the type, development, performance, perception, musical composition intent, and significance. The structure of the music, culture, desire, knowledge, ethics creates the philosophy of aesthetics in music. Other elements of music that create aesthetics in music such as duration, dynamics, harmony, melody, texture, timbre.

Foley Recording

The start of the week was exciting in my Wednesday class as we got into groups of three to undertake a class exercise for recording foley sounds any location we picked. The first half of the class Rose took some time to explain much about the kind of equipment available for us to use for recording sounds and how it works. I found the Rode shotgun hypercardioid microphone very interesting and how very sensitive the mic is. Another type of microphone I learnt was the lavalier microphones which uses a transmitter pack and the they both are battery powered. The idea is to use the two different type of mics to record capture sound.

To be able to capture the sound there is need to have a tracking device. The Zoom F8 multitrack recorder we used as it has about 8 microphone preamps with two sd cards to store our recordings. It is a fascinating unit as it is very portable with options for battery use. It is advised to use a battery that lasts long for recordings that take long periods and therefore it has the option of an external battery. I took note of a very important thing that is gain structure. Too little or too much can make a poor recording, therefore being the mix engineer I made sure that both microphones had a decent level of volume that would record perfect without clipping or recording with low volume. The positioning of the microphones was also of paramount importance so as to capture the sound from the source meaning to say the use of th boom mic required special attention. interestingly the boom itself is light enough to manoeuvre adjusting it to any suitable position without straining. I used to wonder how boom operators would go fro for long hours changing different positions without getting weary and found the secret code. We recorded a couple of sounds with my colleagues from sewers, fence, dog park, footsteps etc. At one point a certain lady thought we are from channel 9 documenting which I found hilarious. By the time we got back to class we had utilised the time period we had been allocated which i find to be very important to be able to work within the time and space assigned and to be able to complete it. Having the recordings played in class to proved to me that preparatory stages are absolutely important. Some recordings from other groups had low volume whilst others had sound coming from xlr cables which could be a fault.

I do look forward to the next part of learning on processing the sounds that we recorded and I do feel that there is more creativity that can be done across with the sounds. One day at a time I will keep doing more research and applying it to the creative work. I have made it a mandate to watch a movie everyday and see how they do their sound designs whether it be film, animation or games. It is a whole new level now for me to be critically analysing and listening to sounds with motion.
